Kingston Mills Road Fixed Bridge and Swing Bridge Closures
Rideau Canal National Historic Site
Smiths Falls, Ontario, June 7, 2016 - Parks Canada advises that the fixed bridge and swing bridge, located on Kingston Mills Road in the City of Kingston, will be closed from early August 2016 until mid-May 2017. This closure will allow Parks Canada to replace the fixed bridge and rehabilitate the swing bridge.
Construction on the fixed bridge is planned to begin in August 2016, with swing bridge construction to follow in October 2016. In order to access areas of the fixed bridge for demolition and repair, the swing bridge must remain functional in the initial phase of the project. Bridge repairs will overlap, where possible, to ensure the timely completion of the project.
The closest alternate vehicle route across the Rideau Canal is Highway 401 just south of Kingston Mills Road, which can be accessed from Battersea Road or Highway 15. Sunbury Road also offers vehicle crossing of the Rideau Canal north of the Kingston Mills site.
Parks Canada is investing an unprecedented $3 billion dollars over 5 years to support infrastructure work to heritage, visitor, waterway and highway assets located within national historic sites, national parks, and national marine conservation areas across Canada. These investments represent the largest federal infrastructure plan in the history of Parks Canada.
Parks Canada would like to thank the community for their cooperation and understanding as we complete this important infrastructure work.
