Peterborough, Ontario, October 21, 2019 – Parks Canada would like to inform the public that, in the coming months, contractors will begin an infrastructure project to replace the fixed bridge at Lock 42 on Canal Road along the Trent-Severn Waterway National Historic Site in Washago.

This construction project will include a full replacement of the fixed bridge, re-facing of the bridge abutments, and road work on the bridge approaches. A road closure of approximately eight to nine months will be associated with this work.

The fixed bridge at Lock 42 is nearing the end of its lifespan and this full replacement will ensure long-term sustainability, while minimizing annual maintenance requirements. The new bridge will have a lifespan of approximately 50 years and ensure the quality and reliability of this important asset along the Trent-Severn Waterway.

While the exact timing of the road closure and details of the detour route are not yet known, Parks Canada recognizes the impact of this work for the traveling public and is committed to providing as much advance notice as possible. Further updates and project details will be provided publicly as they become available. We appreciate your patience and understanding as this project moves forward.
