Learn-to Winter

Lachine Canal National Historic Site

Due to weather conditions, Learn-to Winter activities are cancelled for the 2024 season.

For the third year running, the Parks Canada team welcomes you to Hangar 1825 at the Lachine Canal for a free introduction to winter outdoor activities. On the program: initiation to cross-country skiing workshops for children aged 4 to 12, free snowshoe and fatbike rentals, and entertainment. A great idea for family activities this winter!

Cross-country skiing initiation

Young boy for first time with cross-country skis on fresh snow falls in winter

Children aged 4 to 12 will have the opportunity to try cross-country skiing for free during the spring break.

With Parks Canada teams at their side, they will learn the basic skills of cross-country skiing, as well as how to choose the right equipment. It's the perfect way to get outside and enjoy the winter season! The boots and skis needed for this activity will be loaned to participants free of charge.

An instructor helps a young child put on snowshoes in a snowy day.

To take part, you must reserve your place to guarantee a memorable winter experience for your children.

Schedule

In order to offer learning adapted to children's abilities, fixed time slots are reserved for specific age groups.

  • Good dry socks (bring an extra pair and change socks before the activity)
  • Multi-layered basic clothing
  • A neck warmer
  • A toque
  • Gloves or mittens
  • Sunglasses, as needed and depending on the weather

For fat biking, we recommend:

  • A hat without a pompom that allows you to put on a bicycle helmet

Please note that you can use your own bike helmet for the activity.

Have fun!
