Lachine Canal National Historic Site

The Lachine Canal is full of places to admire the immensity of the canal's industrial heritage, have a picnic, read a book or simply take the time to contemplate nature in the city. Discover all the parks and attractions that run along the 14 kilometers of the Lachine Canal.

Locks No. 1 & No. 2

Located in the Old Port of Montréal, Locks Nos. 1 and 2 were the point of entry to the Lachine Canal for ocean going vessels. Visit the Maison des Éclusiers (lock keepers’ house) and head upstairs for a spectacular view of Old Montréal and Silo No. 5.

Raceway Bank

This park is located on the south bank of the canal and is reserved for special events. Learn-to-Camp activities and other partner events are held in this green space.

Peel Basin Flour Dock

The Peel Basin Flour Dock is a well-kept secret that offers a unique landscape just steps from downtown and Old Montréal, with views of the water, the Five Roses Flour sign, the Montréal skyline, and trains coming and going.

Place des Bassins

Located on the north side of the canal, this green space is the perfect spot for a rest with a superb view of the former Redpath plant.

Saint-Gabriel Lock

The Saint-Gabriel Lock, also known as Lock No. 3, is located at the Des Seigneurs Bridge in the Sud-Ouest borough. The lock allows ships to be raised or lowered 2.6 metres. Many reminders of important manufacturing companies from the past still remain in the area.

Accessible since the fall of 2019, North Link Park connects the Atwater Market and the Saint-Gabriel Lock. There are refreshment stands at Hangar 1825, with rest areas nearby.

Charlevoix Station

Located on the south side of the canal, Charlevoix Station offers a perfect green space for a rest.

Atwater Pole

Atwater Pole is a must-see on the Lachine Canal. Each bank offers several activities and rest areas. Rent a bike or a boat, learn more about this vibrant area’s history, or have a drink on the Canal Lounge canal boat.

Ancienne-cour-de-triage Park

This vast green space on the south side of the Sir-George-Étienne-Cartier Footbridge is ideal for a rest or a picnic.

Côte-Saint-Paul Lock

Like the Saint-Gabriel Lock, the Côte-Saint-Paul Lock (or Lock No. 4) allows vessels to be raised or lowered 2.6 metres. Several remnants from industrial days gone by, as well as companies that are still in business, can be found nearby.

Lasalle-Coke Crane Station

Located halfway between Locks Nos. 1 and 5, Lasalle-Coke Crane Station is the perfect place to stop for a little break. The station was named in honour of the old 50 metres offloading tower nearby.

On the south bank of the canal, Dollier-de-Casson Park is an excellent place to relax and enjoy nature.

Lachine Lock

The Lachine Lock, also known as Lock No. 5, is the gateway for ships entering from Lake St. Louis. This is a quiet spot, with several activities close by in the boroughs of Lachine and LaSalle.

Père Marquette Promenade

Located on a peninsula, this beautiful 1.4 km boardwalk boasts a magnificent view of the St. Lawrence River and the old canal. The Fur Trade at Lachine National Historic Site shows the importance of this site in the time of New France.

René-Lévesque Park

This park also offers a superb view of the St. Lawrence River. Discover a collection of over 50 works of art at the Musée plein air de Lachine, one of the largest outdoor sculpture galleries in Canada. This park is managed by the City of Montréal.
