The St. Lawrence Iroquoians

As early as his first trip in 1534, Jacques Cartier encountered several Amerindians near the present-day city of Gaspé (Honguedo). They had come from Stadacona (now Québec) to fish mackerels. He returned to France with two young members of this group, whom he presented to the king. When Cartier and his crew wintered near the village of Stadacona (see image above) in 1535-1536, they regularly met and traded with the Iroquois. But who exactly were these Amerindians, who have been given the name of "St. Lawrence Iroquoians"?
