Kwatate’ndiara’sennihk -We help each other
Cartier-Brébeuf National Historic Site
From the first interactions between the Iroquoians and the French, exchanges of all kinds, both diplomatic and economic were everyone’s main concerns. The Europeans gave, among other things, small ornaments and knives with metal blades to the Stadaconeans and in return, the Stadaconeans gave the Europeans food (meat, fish, corn) and shared their knowledge (annedda) with them. However, the “good” relationships will soon deteriorate in the fall of 1535. The relationships keep getting worse until they reach a breaking point in 1536 when Cartier abducts 10 Stadaconeans, including Donnacona, and return to France. They died in exile and never saw their village again.
