Apply for a Research and Collection Permit

This online application form requests background information related to you (the applicant), your project team, proposed project timelines, and heritage area(s) of interest.

Before submitting your application, please take note of the following:

  • You are strongly encouraged to contact the research coordinator responsible for the heritage area in which research and collection activities are to take place and visit the heritage area’s webpages for additional information
  • You cannot save a partially completed version of this form and must submit the application as a whole
  • Mandatory fields in this form are marked as “required” and must be completed in order to submit your application
  • Do not use angle brackets “< >” in the form fields
  • You must attach a completed copy of the Project Proposal Form (Microsoft Word document, 311 KB) and other supporting documents before you can submit your application
  • All files to be uploaded must be accessed from the same folder on your computer and must be uploaded together at the same time

1. Area of research (required)

Select one or more of the following.

If your proposed study or survey involves many locations (for example, across Canada), select “Parks Canada”, then select additional locations of interest in #3 below. If the location of interest is not listed, select “Parks Canada.”

To select more than one location, hold down the [Ctrl] or [Cmd ⌘] key and select the appropriate options from the list. NOTE: You must hold down the [Ctrl] or [Cmd ⌘] key when selecting or deselecting an option, otherwise multiple selections will be lost. Selected Heritage Areas will be highlighted and will be listed below the list.

If the project work, duration, location or methods change, you are required to submit a permit amendment, contact the appropriate research coordinator.

  • Single-Year: Projects to be completed within one year from date of issuance. Permits for archaeological research projects are only issued annually.
  • Multi-Year: Permits for natural and social science projects are issued for up to 3 years and only if all terms and conditions of the permit are met throughout the duration. Multi-year permits do not apply to archaeological research projects as they can only be permitted annually.

This should be the same individual named as the Principal Investigator in the Project Proposal Form. Use the following format: salutation (optional; for example, Mr., Mrs., Ms., Dr., or other), first name, surname. Example: Dr. Jane P. Doe.

Use the standard postal format for your country.

Enter the following format: country code (if outside Canada) followed by the area code and number. Example: +1-234-567-8901

Enter the email address to which you want all electronic correspondence related to your permit application directed.

Provide the name of organization(s) or group(s) affiliated with your proposed project. Affiliation refers to the groups that are directly associated with the project that you are proposing. This will normally include your employer or contracting organization(s) and may include other collaborators such as Indigenous Peoples or universities. Categories are to be separated by semicolons (;) and entities within each category should be separated by commas (,).

The following categories must be used, where applicable:

  • employer and/or contracting organizations (for Parks Canada employees, indicate Heritage Area or business unit)
  • universities
  • research institutes
  • Indigenous organizations
  • other governments
  • non-government organizations
  • others

Include telephone number and address.

Provide your level of education and/or details of relevant experience and qualifications that demonstrate your ability to conduct the proposed project.

Provide the name(s) of the sponsoring institution(s) involved in your proposed project. A sponsoring institution is an organization that is providing support (for example, financial or in-kind) to your project. Categories are to be separated by semicolons (;) and entities within each category should be separated by commas (,).

The following categories must be used, where applicable:

  • employer and/or contracting organizations (for Parks Canada employees, indicate Heritage Area or business unit)
  • universities
  • research institutes
  • Indigenous organizations
  • other governments
  • non-government organizations
  • others

Include information for all fieldwork team members. Use the name, telephone number and address format described above and use a semicolon (;) to separate individuals. For example: first name, surname, address, telephone number, e-mail; first name, surname, address, telephone number, e-mail.

The project title should briefly describe the key purpose of the project. This should be the same title used in the Project Proposal Form.

List all sites to be investigated in your proposal, including their Parks Canada site number, as applicable. For sites that have both a Borden number and a Parks Canada site number, please list both. Each site should be separated by a semicolon (;). For example: #E (AaBb-#); #E; #E (AaBb-#).

Examples of activities include, marine remote sensing surveying, snorkelling and/or diving, aquatic vegetation removal, bottom sampling, or excavation/dredging.

Remote monitoring or observations by aircraft, vessel, underwater video, trail camera or other automated recording units (ARUs) do not constitute animal handling or capture, and do not require an animal care protocol. Capture and handling of terrestrial insects, marine invertebrates or crustaceans do not require an animal care protocol.

You must attach the following documents in order to submit your application:

  1. Completed Project Proposal Form (Microsoft Word document, 311 KB)
  2. Copies of interim or approved animal care protocols and approval letter from an institutional Animal Care Committee. This only applies to project proposals where animal care protocols require approval from an institutional Animal Care Committee
  3. As required, additional documents, authorizations, permits, and licences depending on the Heritage Area; applicants must consult the appropriate Research Coordinator(s) for details
  4. As required, Curriculum Vitae (CVs) may be requested from the principal investigator and/or collaborators to support the review of the permit application; applicants must consult the appropriate research coordinator(s) for details

Please Note:

  • All files to be uploaded must be accessed from the same folder on your computer and must be uploaded together at the same time. To upload files:
    1. Click on “Choose Files” button; a new pop-up window will appear
    2. Select the folder where you have stored your files
    3. Select the files to be uploaded; to select multiple files, hold down the [Ctrl] or [Cmd ⌘] key while making your file selection
    4. Once all files are selected, click on the “Open” button in the bottom right corner of the pop-up window
  • If you cannot upload all of your supporting files at this time, you can provide them after submitting your application. Instructions will be provided once your application has been submitted.
The maximum cumulative file size is 7.5 MB.
