Virtual Wetland Wonders

Streaming to you live from one of Elk Island’s many wetlands — experience a hidden underwater world from your classroom! Meet virtually with an experienced interpreter to discover the importance of wetland ecosystems in Alberta.

Learning Objectives

• Students learn about interactions among living and nonliving things in the wetland;
• Adaptations that suit pond organisms to their environment;
• Interactions among wetland organisms and about the role of each organism as part of a food web; and
• The environmental significance of national parks and protected areas in Canada.

Designed for students in Alberta in grade 5, this school program addresses the Wetland Ecosystems topic in the Science curriculum and Physical Geography of Canada topic in the Social Studies curriculum.

• Capacity: One class per time slot, maximum of 30 students per class
• Method: A Google Meet link will be provided to you at the time of booking
• Offered: Monday to Friday, each program is 45 minutes
• Please ensure that all schools have a fair chance to participate in our programs: give us at least two weeks' notice of any cancellations, so that we may offer the time slot to another class.

How the program works

• A Parks Canada interpreter will meet your class on Google Meet and deliver a virtual interpretive program about the importance of wetland ecosystems in Alberta.
• After the presentation, explore in real time a sample of wetland invertebrates up close through use of a digital microscope.
• At the end of the program, there will be time for a short question and answer period.
