Each year, approximately 400,000 visitors come to Elk Island National Park, to enjoy a variety of activities including hiking, cycling, and camping with family and friends. The safety and enjoyment of visitors to national parks and sites are priorities for Parks Canada. Every effort is made to create conditions for visitors to have a positive experience in national parks. This includes providing visitors with information on how to safely explore natural spaces.

Safety is a shared responsibility. Parks Canada works to ensure visitors have a safe visit by assessing the risks, managing hazards, and ensuring that safety information is freely available. Visitors are encouraged to seek out the information needed to stay safe and to make well informed decisions when enjoying these special places. When planning a trip to Elk Island National Park consider the following tips:

1. No matter what activity is planned, remember to purchase a park entry pass. Park passes are available in-person at Parks Canada's entry gates, information centres, and online.
2. Select a trip which best suits the group’s abilities, experiences, interests, equipment and time available.
3. Pack essential items. Bring adequate food, water, clothing and equipment as there are limited supplies sold at the Visitor Centre.
4. Inform friends or family of travel plans and file a trip plan with them.
5. Become familiar with the activity selected by using guidebooks and maps. Check the visitor guidelines for information, trail report for updated trail conditions and important bulletins for any closures.
6. Prepare to be self-sufficient in all weather conditions and emergency situations.
7. Check for fire bans before starting any campfires in designated rings provided.

Cellular telephone coverage varies and may not be available in all areas of Elk Island National Park. Be prepared for any emergency or delays that may arise as help may not be immediately available.
