Update on Keltic Main Lodge - February 2025
Last spring, GolfNorth and Parks Canada made the difficult decision to close the Main Lodge and several cottages at the Keltic Lodge Resort. An investment of tens of millions of dollars would be needed to upgrade electrical and heating systems, conduct repairs, meet accessibility requirements, and comply with other current standards and codes.
We understand the community's deep connection to the Keltic Lodge and recognize the significance of the Main Lodge's closure. We are actively working to assess the building's future through two processes: a comprehensive options analysis and a heritage review.
The Federal Heritage Review Office (FHRO) is also reviewing the historical and cultural value of the building and its surroundings to confirm their heritage value. We thank those of you who provided input for that process. The information from the options analysis and FHRO review will be used to inform decisions about the building’s future and its historical recognition.
While we await the results of these assessments, we are working to minimize the impacts of the closure of the Main Lodge. Parks Canada has removed and stored cultural heritage assets from the Main Lodge, including artwork and photographs. We are also exploring short-term solutions to prevent further damage to the building’s interior that may happen through the winter months.
Parks Canada has begun replacing a portion of the underground infrastructure and has also begun a partial realignment of the Keltic In-Road. Together with recent improvements to the Middle Head trail, these projects will help to assure the economic prosperity of the area.
Parks Canada is keenly aware of the historic, cultural, and community significance of the Keltic Lodge. We thank everyone who has voiced their interest in ensuring this cherished destination continues to thrive and evolve for generations to come.
We recently hosted two open houses to gather additional feedback on the challenges presented by the closure of the Main Lodge, and to inform the community of the actions taken so far, which are also described in the text above. We appreciate and thank you for your involvement in these events.
Once there are additional updates to share, we will reach back out. Parks Canada recognizes the importance of keeping you updated and remains committed to providing additional information as it becomes available. In the meantime, if you have any comments or feedback, please feel free to email us at infocb@pc.gc.ca.
