The underwater archaeology of the sites of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries offer remains that are often spectacular. The increase in maritime traffic has lead to numerous wrecking events, both for sail and steam vessels. The cold water of the country (particularly when fresh like in the Great Lakes) has frequently maintained ships in a remarkable state of preservation.

Precious Clues: A perforated iron hull plate is a great clue for the presence of a nearby wreck. The numerous rivet holes testify of the strength of the construction but also indicate the brutal force of the events that led to the loss and dismantlement of the ship.
