Knowledge Sharing Series

Parks Canada welcomes you to a very special Knowledge Sharing Series at Lower Fort Garry.

On select Saturdays throughout July and August, our guests will speak about their experiences and share knowledge that they have gained over the years. Anyone wanting to learn more about and connect more deeply with First Nations and Red River Métis culture is invited and encouraged to attend.

Admission to all events in included with your daily admission to Lower Fort Garry National Historic Site.

Sessions

Aug. 3 – Soapstone carving with Fredrick Spence - 12 to 3 pm

Fredrick Spence will share the traditional art of soapstone carving, which has been a source of therapeutic release as he reclaims his identity, culture and mental strength through ceremony, language classes and therapy. In addition to the technique, Spence will also share his experience as an artist: that of hard work, happiness, frustration, and the joy associated with completing a piece. Spence was born and raised in Peguis First Nation.

Aug. 17 – Red River carts with Armand & Kelly Jerome - 12 to 3 pm

Armand Jerome is a Métis Red River Cart builder originally from Roblin, Manitoba. Armand has built 57 carts in the past 24 years. In 2008, his Ukrainian wife Kelly joined him to form Jerome Cartworks and together, they not only build carts but also use them on trail rides through Manitoba and Saskatchewan. In their presentation, they will share tales of their trail adventures, cart building and Armand's Métis history.
