Community Update: Overnight Road Closure Required on Colonel By Drive

Rideau Canal National Historic Site

June 7, 2017 - Smiths Falls, ON – The 2016-2017 phase of repair work on the walls of the Rideau Canal National Historic Site in downtown Ottawa is nearly complete.

As part of the final steps of the repair work, the contractor will be removing fences and additional safety measures from around the construction site. Beginning at approximately 9:00 p.m. on June 8th, 2017, the barriers along the southbound lane of Colonel By Drive will be removed. A signed detour route will be in place as this work will require the overnight closure of Colonel By Drive. The road closure will be from the Clegg Street intersection along Colonel By Drive to the intersection at Leonard Avenue.

The rehabilitation of the Rideau Canal walls between Bank Street and Pig Island was the second phase of a multi-year project to rehabilitate the Canal walls in downtown Ottawa. In 2015-2016, the first phase of this project rehabilitated a 500 meter length of the canal wall on the Queen Elizabeth Driveway side near the Bronson Bridge. While a third phase is anticipated during the winter of 2017-2018, a specific location has not yet been selected.
