Chambly Canal National Historic Site

The Parks Canada Agency is responsible for and has jurisdiction over all 5 national historic canals in Quebec and the numerous infrastructures that make them up. For this reason, any project or work involving the land of the Lachine, Chambly, Saint-Ours, Carillon and Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue Canals in any way requires a permit, a lease or a release of liability agreement.

The obligations and duties of the parties must be clearly established before the start of the intervention on the site. Processing time may vary depending on the scope of the intervention, please allow 6 to 8 weeks between receipt of the complete file (the permit application; see in the box) and authorization of the intervention.

The documents that will be provided to you once your application has been processed attest that your project complies with Parks Canada’s plans, policies and guidelines. This requirement applies to all government agencies, public utility companies (water, electricity, natural gas), businesses and citizens. The goal of this approach is to eliminate or reduce potential impacts on boating, public safety, commemorative integrity, and the cultural and natural heritage of the national historic canals in Quebec. This also allows for coordination of the various ongoing or planned works, activities and events on their territory.

Parks Canada protects a vast network of cultural and natural heritage areas that includes the 5 historic canals in Quebec. As with all sites administered by the Agency, the cultural and natural resources in these areas are managed to protect and present the heritage they represent.
