Human Waste Directive
Nahanni National Park Reserve
A new Human Waste Directive is now in place for Pulpit Rock/The Gate and Lafferty Creek in Nahanni National Park Reserve. Digging holes for the purposes of burying human waste is now prohibited at both of these sites. A composting toilet will be available for use for the summer of 2023 at Pulpit Rock/The Gate. Overnight camping will be prohibited at Lafferty Creek for any groups or individuals who do not have the ability to pack out human waste. For further information on this new directive, please see the Superintendent’s Order.
These notices do not apply to Indigenous persons who are engaged in traditional renewable resource harvesting activities.
Due to the number of users and resultant impacts to visitor experience and the environment, the Superintendent has designated the following activities in Nahanni National Park Reserve as prohibited, pursuant to section 7(1) of the National Parks General Regulations, until further notice:
- Digging holes for the purpose of burying human waste at Pulpit Rock/the Gate and Lafferty Creek
- Overnight camping at Lafferty Creek for any groups or individuals that do not have the ability to pack out human waste
Pulpit Rock/the Gate
The existing composting toilet will be prepared and available at Pulpit Rock/the Gate for use during summer 2023.
Lafferty Creek
The human waste facility has been permanently removed at Lafferty Creek. Therefore, visitors are required to pack out waste using a portable toilet kit (such as WAG Bags or Restop). Overnight camping will be prohibited for any groups or individuals that do not have ability to pack out human waste from Lafferty Creek. By collecting and packing out human waste for overnight stays at Lafferty Creek, visitors will help protect this popular overnight location by reducing wildlife attractants and ensuring a positive experience for all campers.
