Community Update: Hamlet Bridge Construction Update

November 19, 2019 – Parks Canada wishes to advise that the Hamlet Bridge 57 Replacement project, originally scheduled to be open for vehicular traffic this fall, will be delayed until early 2020. Parks Canada, along with project managers at Public Service & Procurement Canada, have been working with the contractor to minimize this delay.

Parks Canada recognizes that this delay will cause inconvenience to residents and visitors to the area and asks for your patience and understanding. Investments such as the Hamlet Bridge 57 Replacement project will ensure that residents and visitors will be able enjoy all that the Trent-Severn Waterway and surrounding communities have to offer for generations to come.

The Hamlet Bridge is located at the intersection of Canning Road and Peninsula Point Road, and connects the townships of Severn and Gravenhurst.

To date, the contractor at Hamlet Bridge has assembled the new swing bridge in place on the recapitalized centre pier and assembled the fixed bridge on barges immediately downstream. The fixed bridge will be floated into position and lifted into place when the east pier has been completed.

 

Intermittent closures will follow in Spring 2020 for commissioning and testing in warmer temperatures.

About the Hamlet Bridge Construction

Extensive inspections and repairs over the last number of years have led to the decision to fully replace both the fixed and swing portions of the Hamlet Bridge, as well as the east and west bridge abutments, and the east pier. The mechanical and electrical systems of the bridge will be upgraded and the bridge will be raised to reduce the risk of immersion of mechanical components during high water events. The Hamlet Bridge is being replaced with that of a similar look, to preserve the historic landscape of the area. This work is a part of over $615 million being invested in Trent-Severn Waterway infrastructure.
