Industrial site surveys
Gwaii Haanas National Park Reserve, National Marine Conservation Area Reserve, and Haida Heritage Site
Research has documented the location of industrial sites in Gwaii Haanas. Mining, whaling, fish processing and logging have all left their mark on the land. Beyond the story of resource extraction is the human story. The industrial activities also brought a variety of cultures to Haida Gwaii through the European, Japanese and Chinese people who came to work at these sites.
At least 80 sites in Gwaii Haanas are linked to past industrial activity including Rose Harbour (a former whaling station), Ikeda (an early 20th century ore mine site) and Jedway (an iron-ore mine active in the early 1900s and again in 1960s).
To support the management of these areas, Gwaii Haanas keeps both a comprehensive inventory and an individual record for each site.
