Fire Prevention Week 2023

FIRE PREVENTION WEEK: OCTOBER 8 TO 14, 2023

The week of October 8th to the 14th has been declared as Fire Prevention Week across Canada with the theme Cooking safety starts with YOU.

With Parks Canada employees progressively returning to their workplace, fire prevention in the kitchens and kitchenettes present in the Agency's various workplaces is a renewed priority to ensure everyone's safety.

So, as part of Fire Prevention Week, Parks Canada would like to share some kitchen safety tips with you.

Pay attention to fire prevention!

To help protect your family and work colleagues, apply these simple but effective tips at home and at your workplace.

PREVENTION

  • Stay in the kitchen while you are frying, boiling, grilling, or broiling food. If you leave the kitchen for even a short period of time, turn off the stove.
  • Remain near the kitchen if you are simmering, baking, or roasting food, check it regularly and use a timer to remind you that you are cooking.
  • Always keep a lid nearby when frying
  • Position the handle of pots and pans towards the back of the range.
  • Do not use a stove or stovetop if you are too sleepy or if you have consumed alcohol or any other substance which could impair your judgment and your ability to react.

INTERVENTIONS

  • If you are dealing with a fire involving oil or grease and you decide to contain it:
    • Slide a lid over the pan to smother the flames,
    • Turn off the burner,
    • Leave the pan covered until it is completely cooled.
    • NEVER use water to try to extinguish an oil or grease fire.
  • If you are dealing with an oven fire:
    • Turn off the burner,
    • Keep the door of the oven closed until it is completely cooled.
  • If you have any doubt about fighting a fire:
    • Warn other people on the premises and, if the building has manual stations, activate one,
    • Evacuate the premises and go to the muster point,
    • One you are safe, call 9-1-1 or the local emergency number.

PRESENCE OF KIDS

  • If you are cooking with children around, set up a safety perimeter of at least one metre around the cooking range.
